Date: May, 2003 Location: City Of Portsmouth, Hampshire.
This angry looking cloud produced a very defined, intense downpour over the northern side of the city, as well as a couple of spectacular cloud to ground (CG) lightning strikes.

After a sunny morning, a trough line was building and moving in from the west. The front edge of the trough was menacing as it approached the western side of Portsmouth. A solid gust front lined a wall of rain and hail.

Once the trough had cleared through, it left some very unstable, humid air behind. It wasn't long before the next storm was brewing over Southampton, and the next series of photos shows the storm's arrival.

Another image of the base of a boiling updraft. The lighting beneath the cloud turned a strange yellow-green, perhaps indicative that hail was falling from the downdraft behind.

Now just 2 miles west of the city, darkness began to fall, and a solid wall of rain and hail could be seen roaring across the bay towards Portsmouth.

Just seconds before the downdraft arrived and caused local flooding, outside it had almost turned to night, lit up by sporadic flashes of intra-cloud (IC, or CC) lightning.
