Thunderstorms in Autumn 2002
(Photographs copyright Eye On The Sky)

Date: September 2002 Location: Hope, Flintshire, NE Wales.
During a brief but intense thunderstorm over NE Wales, this lowering formed from the base of the storm. Whilst it wasn't rotating, there were certainly characteristics of a ragged wall-cloud.

As the back edge of another thunderstorm clears in late September over North Wales, a series of huge mammatus forms on the underside of the back-sheared anvil.

The UK, as a rule, does not see Derecho activity. However, this squall line stretched from Cumbria down to the Midlands, and moved slowly westwards (not eastwards) on a narrow trough. Ahead of the main precipitation, was a very elongated line of cloud, resembling the US derechos. As this line hit, wind speeds topped 50mph with driving rain.

Temperatures over north Wales reach the mid-twenties Celsius. However, to the east over Cheshire, trouble was brewing. Vast thunderstorms began appearing on the horizon, marked by this staggered line of tall cumulonimbus anvils.

Another view of the towering, impenetrable line of cumulonimbus clouds, the anvils streaming westwards on this unusually thundery easterly flow.

It took the storms several hours to reach my location, but all hell let loose when they did!

Date: October, 2002 Location: Cefn-y-bedd, Wrexham, NE Wales.
Early October 2002, and I was engaging in a bit of North Wales storm chasing. From a distance, I could see a large updraft which appeared to be rotating. As I drove towards it, this lowering appeared from the base of the updraft.....

The same lowering a short time later. Scud cloud was gradually rotating around the lowering, signalling a meso signature. However, the wall cloud didn't become very well formed, before it completely dissipated.

Date: Mid November, 2002 Location: City Of Portsmouth, Hampshire.
A violent thunderstorm over Portsmouth drifts away, as the back edge of the thunderstorm anvil releases huge mammatus over the city. It looked like a scene from Armageddon!
