Thunderstorms in Autumn 2002
(Photographs copyright Eye On The Sky)

Date: September 2002 Location: Wrexham Bypass, Gresford, NE Wales.
In September 2002, whilst hurtling along the Wrexham-Chester bypass in North Wales, I snapped this developing funnel cloud from a thunderstorm over the uplands of north-east Wales.

Another shot of the funnel cloud which, sadly, because I was driving along a motorway with nowhere to stop, is the last photograph I managed to bag!

Date: Mid November, 2002 Location: Solent, Southsea, Hampshire.
Strong westerly winds brought heavy showers, some with thunder. This towering cumulonimbus and sprawling anvil was dumping heavy rain and lightning on the Isle of Wight. This image was taken from Southsea, looking across the Solent.

Another view of the impressive shower cloud, rumbling its way eastwards across the Isle of Wight.

This developing cumulonimbus has already started precipitating. Dark vertical shafts can be seen falling onto the surface of the Solent, as a torrential downpour commences. Shortly after, thunder rumbled from the cloud tops.

This is the view looking north-westwards from central Portsmouth, towards Fareham and Portchester. A torrential thundery shower has just rumbled across the city, and as it clears a flanking line of cumulus, growing into the main shower, can be seen here.

Mid-November, and back on the shores of the Solent. Yet another towering thundercloud bringing a hefty downpour to the Isle Of Wight. Here, the shower has just reached maturity, and a large shaft of precipitation can be seen falling beneath the updraft.

A brief thundery shower has just moved east across Portsmouth, its anvil clearly seen here as it moves away. Beneath the anvil, is the characteristic developing cumulus of the inflow band, effectively feeding the storm as it moves across the country.

A few hours later, and a more violent thunderstorm raced across the city. However, as it moved away, this frightening sight graced Portsmouth. By the time I grabbed my camera, this funnel cloud was rather ragged and in the stages of decay. However, another few hundred feet and this could well have touched down over North Portsmouth.

Another view of the huge funnel, and a few things to notice as well. Firstly, to the left of the funnel, a smooth line of dark scud cloud can be seen curving around the rotating funnel. Next, at the funnel's base, a faint layer of brown pollution from the city can be seen being drawn into the circulation. Lastly, just above the funnel, a small rainbow!
