Thunderstorm Images in 2002
(Photographs copyright Eye On The Sky)

Date: February 2002 Location: Reading, Berkshire
The first week in February 2002 saw a good deal of wind and rain. One particular showery trough brought a narrow band of thunderstorms across Southern England. Here, the 10km wide band approaches Reading from the west with, menacing dark clouds.

After a ten minute spell of heavy rain accompanied by gale force gusts of wind and a few peals of thunder, the storm in the previous image clears. On the underside of the passing anvil, impressive mammatus cloud can be seen hanging like udders. The sign of a powerful storm!

This amazing photo was sent in by Rob Fuller. He says he snapped this picture at about 8pm by good fortune. Despite using expert techniques before, this one was literally a "click and win" situation. Snapping lightning is probably one of the most difficult photographic subjects. Congratulations to Rob for this impressive image!

The evening sunlight illuminates the back edge of a thunderstorm which bypassed Reading once
again. A dark shelf cloud is contrast beautifully against the yellow glow of a pine tree. This
storm brought heavy rain over Bracknell, 5 miles away.

Date: August 2002 Location: Reading, Berkshire
Directly over Reading, deep convection began maturing during an evening in August, and very dark, very threatening cloud bases began looming overhead. The cloud action was wild, with movements in all directions.

From the dark clouds on the previous image, I began to notice some wild scud action at the base. Before long, it became clear that a small circulation had began, and a lowering began appearing - a ragged funnel cloud!
.
Date: August 2002 Location: Reading, Berkshire
Below and to the right of the main funnel, many small vorticies can be seen, as small cloud swirls with clear air in between. This is where the condensation funnel stops due to dry air and evaporation, but the tornadic circulation countinues.

The funnel cloud begins to dissipate after a minute or so. Although not the most striking funnel in the EOTS gallery, this has been verified by an aquaintance at the Met Office, as being a funnel cloud in its "embyonic stage".

Date: June 2002 Location: Reading, Berkshire
In late June, a clearing cold front contained line convection. Deep cumulonimbus clouds brought a brief but torrential downpour. The back edge of these clouds, together with anvils are pictured here over Reading, Berkshire.
