21/05 Day
5 Bust on the High Plains! The potential for severe weather was shifting today, with the High Plains at risk from fairly isolated but severe thunderstorms. After a swim and a hot tub, we headed out to the hotel carpark to set the car up for the day. Once again, our hotel was the prime choice for Vortex 2 and their array of several DOW trucks and countless chase team vehicles, all of which were packing the carpark. We left the hotel by late morning and headed north and west through Northwest Kansas and into eastern Colorado. The journey was blighted by a lot of low cloud and major roadworks, some of which meant waiting for ten minutes as a pilot "follow me" vehicle was deployed to take us through the miles of ripped-up road. We did encouter the legend of the High Plains though, in his dayglo robes. We were right in amongst the Vortex 2 convoy for most of journey and, in some cases, found ourselves leading the convoy! We even lunched in the same spot in the small town of Wray, although we were very much of the opinion that they were following us! The sun came out eventually and, by the time we reached our final destination of Brush in eastern Colorado, skies were blue and temperatures were climbing into the 20s. It was there that we waited, waited and waited, all the time seeing high based showers forming to the west of us then dying as they descended off the Rockies and onto the Plains. After a number of hours, it was becoming clear that the day was going to be a bust. We had already booked into the same Comfort Inn as last night, and that meant a 200 mile drive back south-eastwards again. After a brief stop for a late dinner in Limon, Colorado, we headed back to the hotel, arriving by around midnight. The wind was strong all day but by nightfall it was really howling through the hotel, gusting to around 45mph! Total mileage: 426 miles |
Skies
were clear blue at our hotel during the morning, except for a strange,
narrow line of cloud stretching from horizon to horizon.
. |
Opposite
the hotel, Vortex 2 were already filling their DOWs with gas ready for
the day ahead.
. |
Time
to pack our car ready for the day, as numerous other chase vehicles
surrounded us.
. |
DOWs
were everywhere.
. |
Setting about our journey westwards through Kansas, and even here we couldn't shake off the Vortex Team's DOWs! |
Parked
up in line at one of the numerous sets of roadworks. This one was several
miles long and required us to follow a maintainence car through dirt
tracks and building sites! But what was the hold up?.....
. |
Vortex
2 chasers must have been livid by the reason for the hold up!
. |
The roadworks
controller was a legend in his own lifetime and wondered if we'd ever
met the Beatles. Meanwhile, I turn into one of the Village People.
. |
Lunchtime
in Wray, and still we couldn't shake off those pesky DOWs!
. |
One of the many BNSF goods trains that snake their impossible length across
the Plains countryside. |
= |
The driver
blew his stupidly loud foghorn especially for us!
. |
The front
of the train is already passing beyond the curvature of the Earth, and
this was only half of its length!
. |
Our final
destination in Brush. We'd locked Matt out of the car at this stage
for eating tuna sandwiches!
. |
Some
nice Kelvin Helmholtz waves. We'd stopped here, despite the warning sign. . |
The
only thing resembling a storm today - a weak high based cell dying a death
as it left the Rockies. . |
A
short section of a 40 mile road without corners. Steering wheels are for
chumps! . |
The
final show of the day, as we sat down to dinner at Dirty Denny's in Limon.
The waitress decided to throw Matt's food at him. . |
