27/05 Day
11 With little prospect of any severe weather today, we decided to use the time to travel northwards in preparation for the next few days. After a lazy morning in our hotel in Limon, complete with pensioner acrobatics in the swimming pool, we headed northbound by midday. Our lunch stop was in Sterling (Colorado) at the usual Subway, and we finished off in northern Nebraska at the Best Western Hotel in the town of Chadron. En route, we had time to watch some tumbleweed, admire the sandhill views, spot some prairie dogs and even try our hand at SUV rallying. We dined at a local restaurant, the Heritage Grill, and were really impressed with what a lovely place Chadron was. By the time we returned to the hotel, the nocturnal jet had kicked up and there was incredible low level winds to the lee of the mountains. We sat outside with a drink in temperatures in the mid 20s Celsius at 10pm, yet there was a 30mph wind bending the trees double. It was quite a surreal experience. Tomorrow should see good potential for thunderstorms across Nebraska and the Dakotas, so we should be well placed. Total mileage: 290 miles |

Packed and ready to
go. The view from our Comfort Inn in Limon was pretty good, out onto
the Plains |

In fact, our view was
so good we could see Pike's Peak on the front range of the Rockies,
just west of Colorado Springs, some 80-90 miles west of Limon. Photo
has been contrast adjusted. |

With
time to kill on our journey northwards, we passed some time by taking
some motoring shots of our unit!

We also
spotted lots of prairie dogs standing to attention at the roadside,
so pulled over to take a shot of one particularly curious critter.

The roads of western Nebraska were all very similar to this. Corners.
Who needs them? |

The scenery of western
Nebraska varied hugely, from flat farmland through sand dunes, to
woodland valleys, and also lots of undulating bluff land such as this
above. |

One thing
didn't change though - we were constantly stuck in horrific roadworks
using these pilot cars!

Parked
up in the centre of Chadron, a lovely small town in the far north-west
of Nebraska.

We finished the night sitting outdoors, analysing tomorrow's storm chances.
What you can't see is that it was in the mid 20s Celsius yet blowing a
gale. The tree in the background looked like it was going to fall over! . . |
