The
capital, Hugh Town at night, as seen from the Garrison.
The
Garrison is lined with battlements; legacies from several wars. Here, the
main gate on Garrison Lane provides a view to the harbour below.
Hugh
Town, as viewed from the south on Pendennis Head. The Garrison headland
is on the left of this photo, Porthcressa beach in front of Hugh Town, and
in the background is the island of Bryher.
Just
some examples of the rich wildlife on St. Mary's - here's a Rock Goby caught
in a small rockpool at low tide. Behind him, one of the many sea anenomes
that lined the shore...
...and
here's an impressive sea urchin. This one was as big as a football!
...but
you wouldn't mess with this guy! A large edible crab, caught by our very
own crabbing line after a titanic struggle! We put him straight back of
course!
...and
away from the rocky coast, butterflies, such as this small Blue, were abundant
in August.
Wildlife
of a different kind! During our week in Scilly, I befriended a Bernese Mountain
Dog from the Ship Inn, on the harbour side! :)
Pendennis
lighthouse, which sits on Pendennis head to the south-east of Hugh Town.
Spectacular
rock formations line the southern and eastern coasts of St. Mary's, such
as this cantilever rock near Old Town.
