Sunsets & Sunrises in 2001 & 2002

Almost like an oil painting, the back edge of this cold front is lit by a fading sun before it passed overhead.

One of my favourite cloud photos. The detail in the cirro-cumulus cloud sheet is awesome together with the setting sun.

A brilliant photograph at dusk looking over the bay at Salcombe. What looks to be a cold frontal clearance displays many layers of cloud including the dark, overhanging cold front. Picture courtesy of Catherine Miles.

Another superb summer sunset, baywatch style, looking from Bournemouth beach out over the English Channel. Picture courtesy of Catherine Miles.

As the sun sets over the snow-fields across North Wales in early January, 2002, warm air begins to push in from the south. This causes the snow to begin melting, producing thick but low level fog.

Five minutes later and as the sun continues to set, the fog thickens. After dark, and unable to be pictured, the fog reduced visibility to around 50m at times, making driving almost impossible.

A fantastic sunset with high cirrus cloud reflecting the low sun, producing red, yellow and an eery purple light. Image sent in by Rob Fuller .

An impressive, almost surreal sunrise over Reading. The different levels of cloud are lit in differing ways by the rising sun, from the low, orange cumulus, to the high, golden cirrus.

Over the hills in North Wales, late January 2002, the setting sun casts superb sun-beams behind a large cumulus cloud. These crepuscular rays lasted for only 3 minutes before the sun set behind the horizon.

During the evening, a combination of high pressure haze and smoke in the atmosphere set the scene for a superb sunset. Here, a lone cumulus deflects the sun's rays beautifully.
